By tossing $2,000 away on a laptop which was supposed to have this supposed “upgrade path lasting two (graphics) generations...”
... Only for Pascal to come and destroy that - by that, I mean requiring an absolute overhaul on the laptop itself to accept the 10x0 MXM units (motherboard, PSU, etc.)
Fuck. I doubt I could take MSi to court with a class action lawsuit if they promised to have an upgrade path.
Lesson of the day? Don’t do what Uncle Satoshi did, kids.
Update: Someone had an offer sheet up for trade-ins and, welp. I get to cough up $700 for a fuck-up on MSI’s part.

Planning to upgrade a laptop is asking to be bent over. Desktops for gaming, laptops for mobile. If you must get a laptop for gaming, you want to wait as long as possible, then get the best available...

Funny enough, I have a custom desktop but thanks to some circumstances, I now have to get a laptop.
I won’t lie and say I made the worst decision possible when I got my GT72 - it’s not a bad machine, don’t get me wrong. The way MSi handled it leaves a lot to be desired, and I hope they don’t go down the same path that Volkswagen did.

Well they do have a way to upgrade to a Pascal card do they not? A new card was always going to require quite a bit of work.

They do, except it requires the motherboard to be replaced.
At this point, it’s basically the entire unit.

MSI had no way to tell exactly how much work it would take to perform an upgrade, especially with the uncertainty around pascal.

Yeah, that’s true. Just a bit puzzled as to why they’d try to tout and promise that the GT series laptops will have an upgrade path, at all.

More like don’t buy a gaming laptop no matter how much you need the portability. Go ahead, ask me about the Toshiba Qosmio X870 I have on my desk currently running on Intel on-board graphics waiting for me to get bent over a barrel price wise on a used Nvidia 670M on Ebay to replace the unit that has become unresponsive.

Normally, I’d agree except that 98% of the time, I’m not at home to enjoy using my desktop (which has been patrted out, motherboard, CPU, ram and hard drive remaining). I’m usually on the move or on the Sounder train.

Lesson of the day, dont buy a item that is NOTORIOUSLY hard to upgrade if you want to upgrade. You want upgrade paths, get a desk top.

I did. They also had a form for this as well, so here goes nothing.

It’s actually kind of straightforward to replace an MXM module in this laptop. Remove fans, heatsink and some odd screws.

Update: Just called their customer service department and they just basically said there’s a trade in program but for people who spent money on the behemoth called the GT80.
